Welcome back to the Big IDEA!

You will recall that we talked last week about FOCUS, and how important it is that you remain undistracted by the many things that are not in line with your primary objectives.

Your primary objective should be to build a successful online business. Focus will help you get there, and the two questions that you ask yourself to remain focused are “Where am I?” and “What should I be doing?

NARROWING YOUR PASSION'S FOCUS

This week will be taking the first of two steps toward that objective by narrowing our PASSION into a focused NICHE, and identifying if that PASSION, that NICHE can be profitable.

A quick note here: if you've yet to identify your passion, you can continue to learn from this exercise, but it would be much more beneficial if you can apply these steps to your actual PASSION. Identifying that PASSION is truly critical to building a successful online business. Remember, Internet marketing is simple, but it is a bit of work and the last thing you need is more work you are not passionate about.

Note: If you're not sure what you are passionate about, I have a great course that walks you through discovering your Passion - you can learn more about the Pursuing Passion course by clicking here - or read more at the end of this newsletter.

A NICHE is an area of focus. It is essentially a narrow objective that we direct our attention toward for building our business. For example, the very broad niche area would be health and wellness. For our purposes, however, we need to drive the focus down much more narrowly, and pick what would be a sub topic in Health and Wellness for us to focus on. It should be easy for you to see that the broad NICHE of Health and Wellness would cover so much information that you can't possibly be an expert in all of it or even have a good understanding of all of it.

Vitamins. Personal training. Nutrition. Medicine. Herbs. Exercise. Insurance statistics. Workout equipment. Acupuncture. Natural remedies. Chiropractic. Diagnostics. Each of these is a more narrowly defined NICHE. At minimum, you should refine your PASSION down to one of these subcategories – preferably, you should take this down even farther to a highly specific NICHE.

In the personal training area, you could select marathon training, personal training for women, strength training from men, or bicycle fitness. These more specific NICHEs allow you to "get your head around" a particular subject and become an expert or highly knowledgeable person in a particular area.

Another example would be for someone whose PASSION is cooking. Cooking is far too broad a niche. Julia Child, you'll remember, became famous for focusing on the Art of French cooking. So, choose the type of cooking that she is your favorite – Italian, American, German, etc. You could even refine this this further by your target audience. Let's say that you are trying to help busy parents. Your NICHE could be something like "quick, healthy Italian meals in under 30 min."

Back to the Health and Wellness NICHE example, you could focus on workouts for men over 40, or diet plans for teenagers, or acupressure for personal use.

Take these examples and look at your PASSION. How can you narrow the FOCUS of your PASSION? If you like brainstorming or mind-mapping, there are a number of free tools online to help you… one of my favorites (with almost no learning curve) is https://bubbl.us/ – here’s an example of quick outline of our Health and Wellness discussion…

 Mind Map Example

Now, you can do the same thing on a piece of paper, so don't think you have to be tied to technology to narrow down your NICHE. The important thing is to do it, and do it now!

So...

Narrow down that NICHE, and in the next Big IDEA I'll be sharing with you how to determine if that NICHE will likely be profitable. By the end of next week's exercise you'll know just what your community is looking for online, and will talk about how to start setting up your business so that you're the person they find when they come looking.

I'm excited that were making progress toward what your new business will be – please leave me a comment below or drop me an e-mail with your questions anytime.

Until next week!

Kindest regards,

Greg
